Individual Therapy in Denver, CO
While individual therapy is as unique as the person sitting across from me, there are common themes at the center of the work, such as anxiety that won't quiet down, depressive symptoms that have thrown a drab lens on life, the complicated grief of a breakup or a loss — including anticipated loss that seems to be happening in slow motion, old patterns that keep resurfacing in new places, or just a vague sense of being stuck.
AEDP (or Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy, whew!), also attachment-informed, is my foundational model for working with individuals. Much of what brings people into therapy connects to how we learned, early on, to get our needs met and protect ourselves. Though that’s not the whole story for every client, it's almost always part of it. We work on the present-day symptoms directly, and we may also look underneath at the patterns driving them so the change you’re making actually holds.
What makes AEDP unique from typical talk therapy is its emphasis on experience. While analysis and intellectual insight have a rightful place in therapy, they’re also recognized as processes that can sometimes move us away from our feelings. It’s understandable why so many of us might keep our distance, consciously or not…emotions can be awkward, uncomfortable, or downright painful. But emotional experience is where real change happens, so we move toward it at a pace that accounts for your nervous system.
Being able to slow down in the presence of a safe other, bring mindful gentle curiosity to parts of our experience that tend to get overlooked or denied, and then tend to them with care is a transformational process. It can be enlightening, confusing, weird, funny, joyful, relieving and more. Learning how to do it takes trust, connection, patience, and practice. So that is what we build, together.
I work with adult individuals in Denver, with limited availability on Wednesdays for clients based in Lafayette, as well as virtually across Colorado.
Common reasons people seek individual therapy:
Anxiety, racing thoughts, chronic worry, difficulty relaxing or feeling settled
Depression or low mood, loss of interest in things that used to matter – “meh” ness
Chronic shame
Relationship patterns that keep repeating across different partners
Life transitions like moves, career changes, breakups, becoming a parent, loss
Difficulty trusting others or letting people get close
Processing past relationships or family dynamics
What can I expect therapy to be like?
Individual sessions with me are often slower than you might expect, and more attentive to what's happening in the room between us than to simply working through an agenda. I'm relationship-forward, which in individual therapy means our relationship itself is an active part of change and healing.
In practice, that means I'll often bring things back to process: what you're noticing inside right now, to what just happened as you said that, to what it's like to be sitting across from me with this particular thing on the table. This can feel unfamiliar if you're used to more structured or cognitive approaches. That’s okay! In a way, we’re learning a new language.
What you'll find is a consistent space to slow down enough that things you've been moving too fast to feel can actually surface, and someone genuinely curious about what you find when you do. These experiences are what you take home with you…not “homework.”"
How do I know if I’m ready, or if this is the right fit?
Props if you're asking yourself this.
On readiness: you don't have to wait until things are dire. Many people understandably do, but there's plenty of work we can do well before life reaches that point. A useful starting place is to take stock of your curiosity, your openness to something new, and your sense of what kind of change(s) you're looking for. None of those have to be particularly “big,” by the way. They're just a place to begin, and we can explore further together from there.
Fit takes more discernment, and usually some live interaction. Maybe a trusted person sent you my way, or you found your way here on your own. If something pulls at you after reading these pages or watching my video, that may be worth paying attention to. I don't expect the kind of trust that makes good therapy possible to be obvious from the jump, but notice what you feel. And if you'd like a brief consultation call to get a sense of each other and ask some questions, I'd love to chat.
